Women are fighting a social battle in-ground and at home as well : Shreyasi Singh

International shooter addressed online lecture series ‘Stree Shakti Samvad’ of MCU

Bhopal, 24th June, 2020: International shooter and Arjun Award winner, Sushree Shreyasi Singh said women are battling a social and mental fight at the playground along with their home.

‘It looks nice when girls ask about sports. We try to nurture our children making disparity on the basis of gender. Boys are given cricket bat and ball whereas girls are given kitchen sets or dolls. Sports and males are linked together but it seems weak link in case of sports and female. There is a need to change this mindset. Media is doing this task at some extent’, She said in online lecture series ‘Stree Shakti Samvad’ of Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication today.

She said that she is the first girl in Bihar who participated in national level short term shooting competition and after one year, she became the first female player to bag silver medal in senior level in the state. She quoted an incident of Mexico and said she was given low quality cartridges for practice and male players were given good quality cartridges.

She told another incident of 2014. She returned to India after winning a silver medal in Commonwealth Games in shooting but did not receive even any welcome from the Bihar government. When media interviewed her and pointed out it, the chief minister then felicitated her three months later, she said.

She suggested that media should avoid one-sided and without facts reporting. She said women in our country are very talented and strong mentally and physically. They fight in every circumstance. What is needed to provide them a platform and there is a need to hone their skills.

She said that media is blamed for cricket-centric coverage but the media covers what people want. The media is doing its work well. Common people take an interest in all sports and avail opportunities to their children.
