Media should suggest solutions with questions: Prof. Sanjay Dwivedi
Vice Chancellor interacts with students through Facebook live on ‘Guru Purnima Prasang’ in MCU
Bhopal, 4th July, 2020: Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication, Vice Chancellor Prof. Sanjay Dwivedi said that the concept of media is western and based on negativity. It should be positive as well. Media is not alone for news, it is for the society and the country too. There is a need to Indianise media which suggest solutions with questions, have intellectual discourse and concern for the country.
Prof Dwivedi was interacting with students a day before Guru Purnima through Facebook live. He said every field should be value-based and media should also have values.
Shri Dwivedi called upon students to develop specialisation in a field while studying. They should not only pass information but interpret and analyse the information too. Media education is not for obtaining degree alone. In fact, journalism strengthens society and share the pain of the people.
Journalism is also the work of strengthening society in the pain and pain of society. The job of journalists is not just to give news. Verification also has to be done.
He said that there is no need to be disappointed in the Covid 19 pandemic time. We are the country with population of 130 crore and growing economy. We will stand agai.
He said that the increasing influence of Information technology has yielded positive and negative results both. Social media has become a tool to misguide and mislead people. Content without facts is in abundance. The fake news industry is emerging. News too were planted in conventional media as well but they were not in such a big number.
User-generated content platforms like Facebook and YouTube are earning more than a major media house. We should develop a model of value and fact-based journalism on the place of agenda-driven journalism.
Prof Dwivedi recalled the great contribution of freedom fighter Makhanlal Chaturvedi. The great journalist Shri Chaturvedi had an unprecedented contribution in the field of journalism during the freedom movement. He was one of the disciples of Mahatma Gandhi and had respect for the Hindi language and returned his Padmashri awarded by the government as a protest against the implementation of the Official Language Act. His press office was raided 63 times and he went to jail 12 times. In a editors’ conference of Bharatpur in 1927, he expressed the need for opening of journalism training institution.
