Department of Communication Research

There has been an increasing need of trained research professionals for media, advertising, social media monitoring agencies, marketing and market research agencies, and research on digital media platform, due to remarkable development in the media industry. This need gave way to the establishment of Department of Communication Research in 2014.

The courses in offer by the department are M.Sc. (media research), M. Phil. (media studies) and PhD (course work). The department aims at providing the best curriculum to its students and train them with thorough practical and theoretical knowledge. Handpicked, experienced faculty also includes prominent researchers and industry experts who are invited to train the best minds to enter the world of communication research.

The department is equipped with latest computer lab and a reference library which is well-stocked with research journals, magazines, newspapers and online books. It organises regular workshops and seminars on media and inter-disciplinary research and interaction with renowned personalities of media education and research. Students are also imparted training for conducting field research.

The course boasts of alumni working with research organisations like Bullmart Research, Gandhi Fellowship, ABP News, and several universities.

About the programme:

First of its kind in the country, this four-semester course has been designed to meet the rising demand of research professionals for media, communication industries, advertising and PR agencies, social media agencies, marketing and market research firms and survey agencies.

The course enables research skills in the students and grooms them for progression into higher education. Students will learn about research-related methodology flare-up and shall also be trained in SPSS, survey studies for data collection, classification, analysis and interpretation of data, media monitoring, social media content and trend studies and research on various demographic perspectives.

Course objectives:

  1. Providing in-depth guidance and understanding of the theoretical as well as practical aspects which will aid skills for research.
  2. Imparting training and skills to the students for promotion research, strategic and impact assessment studies, social media analysis, concept test-evaluation etc.

PhD (course work) for Communication, Journalism, TV/Film Production and Media Studies

Eligibility criteria:

Applicants must be postgraduates with a score of 55% in relevant subject and should qualify the PhD entrance exam conducted by the university.

About the programme:

The course work prepares PhD scholars for doctorate through orientation and intensive training to enhance research skills. The curriculum enables scholars with advanced understanding of topics like study of research methodology, minor project and studies of selected books on communication and journalism.
